For a number of years I contributed to ESPN Outdoors, mostly conservation, science and angling stories. One of my favorites was a piece I did on the great Jack Samson. Jack and I hunted blue grouse together in northern New Mexico and I wrote about his life and career, from the Fighting Tigers over China in WWII to his time at Field & Stream in New York to his very active retirement in Santa Fe, where he grew up. We miss Jack.
I had the distinction of appearing in this anthology of outdoors stories that appeared in the New York Times. Stories far better than mine by the likes of Nick Lyons, Thomas McGuane and Ernest Schweibert grace this book. My story, Nature has a Way of Finding us All first appeared in my M.A. thesis.
History is an affliction of mine. Wild West Magazine published my story on the Massacre Canyon battle that occurred in the headwaters of the Rio de las Animas, the river of souls, in Sierra County, New Mexico. Buffalo Soldiers were ambushed by Warm Springs Apache, Victorio and his men in September 1879. My boy Carson and I visited the graves of the men deep in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness in 2013 on a backpacking trip. The flag in the photo is mine. The grave markers were hauled in by the Medal of Honor Society many years ago. Sgt John Denny, born into slavery, earned the Medal of Honor here, carrying a wounded man to safety under blistering rifle fire from Apaches. This is ground made holy in a precinct of American history.
Our place, the historic Miller House, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a contributing structure to the Hillsboro Historic District in Sierra County, New Mexico. I co-authored the book for the Hillsboro Historical Society. Proceeds go to the HHS, so please buy one and support preservation.
I write a monthly column titled, "Backyard Trails." It's about travel and the outdoors in the Land of Enchantment. I've covered items like the life-history of my favorite bird, the white-breasted nuthatch, to snowshoeing and sledding. On occasion I write the "Vecinos" column and a cover story now and again.
