I am the son of a decorated Korean War soldier who helped liberate South Korea from the Communists, 1951-52. Dad’s company commander, Capt. Edward C. Krzyzowski, saved the lives of his men in giving his own on Bloody Ridge. For that he earned the Congressional Medal of Honor — and my family’s eternal gratitude.

I write about history, nature, conservation, the outdoors, and rambling the American Southwest. I live in the piñon-juniper woods of northern New Mexico with my wife and children and a Labrador retriever the color of a biscuit.

More than 170 titles have published my work, such as ESPN, Farmers’ Almanac, New York Times, Fishing Tackle Retailer, Outdoor Life, Country Living, TROUT, Sporting Classics Daily, Iron Worker, Tennessee Magazine, Santa Fe New Mexican, and Wild West.

My work was anthologized in Upriver and Downstream. I co-authored and edited Around Hillsboro as a fund-raiser for the Hillsboro Historical Society. America’s Bountiful Waters garnered the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s 2022 Conservation History Award, and New Mexico State University named me an Outstanding Alumnus of the Year in the College of Agriculture.

Quick Reference Publishing produced my fish guides, 31 titles in all, covering nearly the entire country. Joe Tomelleri, “The Audubon of Fishes,” illustrated the booklets. Each guide covers 65 fish species you are likely to catch where you live. Five-star reviews prevail.

My interests meld in my academic background.
B.S. Fisheries Science, New Mexico State University
M.Sc. Fish Ecology, University of Arizona.
M.A. Rhetoric, University of New Mexico.

I am a member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. I have earned excellence in craft awards from OWAA, American Fisheries Society, and Association for Conservation Information, Inc.
